Google's Blogger Has A Huge Vulnerability!

Here's a quick timeline of what's been going on with the shifting of this site off of Blogger.

The way that the site has been set up since November of 2004 is that Google has hosted all of the content at ctownbochur.blogspot.com while ctownbochur.com simply forwarded you over to the content of ctownbochur.blogspot.com.

This past Friday, Google's robots decided that ctownbochur.blogspot.com was a spam blog, with just a robot running it. (I wish I had a robot running the site-then I'd be able to take a true vacation!) They locked the site, and I was unable to make or change any posts.

I immediately decided to flip the switch and have ctownbochur.com forward over to dansdeals.com and to migrate all of the posts and comments over to dansdeals.com.

Additionally, I also filed a challenge to Google about their blacklisting of my site, and asked them to remove it asap.

By Saturday Google deleted ctownbochur.blogspot.com. Anyone who went to that address received a "page not found" error.

The really scary thing is that from Saturday until today, ANYONE COULD HAVE TAKEN ctownbochur.blogspot.com AND MADE THEIR OWN SITE WITH THE NAME.

After spending a small fortune calling Google from my cell phone in Israel to get them to fix the problem, they finally restored ctownbochur.blogspot.com today.

What would have happened if someone had taken over the name during the duration that the site was deleted?
Who knows!

GOOGLE-FIX THIS ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE'S SITE DOES GET HIJACKED!!!

Originally posted on 07/15
Last year I upgraded the supplied 40 GB 4,200 RPM(Rotations per minute) hard drive on my Dell 700m notebook to a 100 GB 7200 RPM hard drive.

Being the early adopter that I am I paid dearly for it at the time ($220 or so) but it was the best upgrade that I made on my laptop.

The performance boost from the 7,200 RPM hard drive was much more noticeable than from more RAM or a faster processor.

After the upgrade windows booted up in literally half the time, and programs opened up without any delays (e.g. before the upgrade firefox used to take a fair amount of time to open up, afterwards it didn't take any time at all!)

At any rate Dell is now selling the 160GB 7,200 RPM drive for just $129, which is an unbeatable price.

The drive is manufactured by Seagate. (You can tell that it's a Seagate by clicking on the picture of the hard drive to enlarge the image!)

Even though the links say that it's for a "Latitude D820" this will work fine in any notebook that takes standard 2.5" SATA notebook hard drives.

This drive is available from Dell Home Outlet or Dell Small Business.
I would recommend buying from Dell Small Business, just in case Dell Home Outlet might send you a refurbished drive!

American Express Financial Review-What Is It And How To Avoid It...

American Express occasionally freezes the credit card accounts of individuals with high-risk patterns.

They request lots of personal information, such as IRS returns, that most people are hesitant to fax away in today's age of security risks.

I personally have a dozen or so AMEX cards, and have never had a financial review, so I don't speak from my own experience, but here are some important steps you can do to avoid the dreaded financial review:

-Keep your credit lines on each of your AMEX's below $25,000.
One symptom commonly found among people who have been hit with a review is very high credit lines.

-NEVER utilize over 50% of the credit line of any of your AMEX cards.
If you have a Starwood card with a $10,000 limit, never have a balance of over $4,999, even if you pay it off every month on time.

-Keep your collective credit balances well below your stated annual income.
If you reported an annual income of $200,000, AMEX won't like it if you have $190,000 of credit available to spend in one month.

What if you do get hit with a financial review?

Immediately call up AMEX and ask to close down every one of your accounts.
If the AMEX financial review bean-counters close your accounts they will say closed by issuer, which is quite bad.
If you pre-emptively close them they will simply say closed at customer request, and will barely hurt your credit.

Suffering from Starwood AMEX withdrawal?
Don't worry!
Since you pre-emptively closed your accounts, just wait a few months and then you can apply all over again, and you will even get the signup bonus again!

My 1 Month Schedule...

I'm going to sticky this as the top post until the end of August as a reminder that updates will be sporadic for the next month.
Please scroll down for new posts.

Will I be forgiven if I don't make 5 posts a day for the next month?

To Blog About My Trip-Or Not To Blog?

I've never blogged about any of the trips that I have taken in the past. However because it seems that Israel is always a topic of interest in the comments here I was debating whether to write anything about it here.

Is there anything specific you would like to read about?
Reviews of the 5 Starwood hotels that I am staying at?

Or should I just stick to finding deals?

On another note, it's been a lot of fun bumping into some fans in NYC and here in Israel.

At the Tudor Hotel in Manhattan, where I stayed last Sunday night, I bumped into quite a few people who were there only because they saw the $19 deal on this site!
One couple even told me where to nab a free parking spot for the night!
Free parking in Manhattan? Who knew!

Poor Cell Phone Reception In Your House? Here's The Solution To Your Problems!!!

I was going to post this a couple of weeks ago, but I wanted to test it out before writing about it.

Amazon now carries "Wireless Extenders Cell Phone Signal Booster"
The way it works is that you set up the antenna wherever you have the best signal, most likely outside an upstairs window or in your attic.
There is a wire that connects the antenna to the base system.
The base system is placed where you have the weakest cell phone signal and it repeats the good cell phone signal for 2,500 sq. ft.

I set this up in my house, and where I used to have 1-2 bars downstairs I now get 4-5 bars. Additionally I used to not have a signal in my basement, but now I do!

Is it worth $230? Try it out for yourself, if it doesn't work out for you, you won't be out a single penny!

There are 3 versions of this product.
-An 800MHz booster for Cingular/ATT, Verizon, and Alltel. This one retails for $299, and is on sale from Amazon for just $230 shipped.
-A 1900MHz booster for Sprint and T-Mobile. This one also retails for $299, and is on sale from Amazon for just $230 shipped.
-A 800MHz/1900MHz booster that works for all companies. This one retails for $399, but is currently not available from Amazon.

800MHz booster for Cingular/ATT, Verizon, and Alltel.

1900MHz booster for Sprint and T-Mobile.

Please Note:
-It is critical to follow the directions carefully for you to get the optimal signal boost!
-If you don't have a cell phone signal anywhere in or around your house then this will not solve your problem!

The cheapest ticket that I could find was from PIT-JFK for $39+ Each way ($98 including all taxes)
Here is Jetblue's interactive route map, which can show you all non-stop and connecting options.

This unreal offer is in response to the still low traffic numbers for Jetblue in Pittsburgh, where people have some sort of strange love exclusively reserved for USeless Airways.

This offer was alerted to me by 2 Pittsburghers from a Pittsburgh-Post Gazette article.
That article just says that you get a free ticket by booking on Jetblue.com-it neglects to mention that you NEED TO REGISTER FIRST, or even how to register!
(Insert Pittsburgh newspaper joke here...)

Post-Gazette Article Linky

Previous Post Linky "Jetblue: "We're Still Looking For Signs Of Life In Pittsburgh..."

Rules:
-Register and book a roundtrip ticket by 06/30/07 (11:59pm MT)
Travel must be completed by 11/15/07.
-Travel must originate in Pittsburgh.
-After travel is completed (just buying the ticket is not enough!) you will receive 100 Trueblue points, which is automatically converted into 2 one-way systemwide vouchers.
-Vouchers expire 12 months from when they are converted from points into vouchers
-You must sign up for a Trueblue account to register.
-Limit one bonus per Trueblue account.
-Offer does not apply to previously booked travel.
-The free ticket does not have to include Pittsburgh.

I noticed another slight inaccuracy in the article which says,
"Travelers who book flights through www.jetblue.com will receive 100 TrueBlue points at the conclusion of their travel, which can be redeemed for a free trip anywhere JetBlue flies. JetBlue serves 54 cities with up to 575 daily flights. The TrueBlue points will expire in one year from the date of issuance."
Actually the 100 points that you get after flying automatically becomes 2 one-way vouchers, and those vouchers expire in 12 months.

Why Can't I Get The Fare For The Dates That I Want? A Guide To Purchasing Airline Tickets!

From my inbox,
"Dan, I live in New York and I always look forward to your fare postings.
My problem with your farecompare links is that most of the time the fare says sold out for the dates that I want. Can you explain to me this phenomenon?"

You're in luck-there are 3 great deals out of NYC tonight!

Here's some behind the scenes info.

Airlines publish airfares 3 times daily. From the time they are published it takes between 3-5 hours for it to reach all of the booking sites.
Often I post the deal soon after the fares are published-so they are not yet bookable.

Airlines have a very complicated system of class codes. In coach itself an airline can have 20 different fare codes. The price that I write about is the lowest published fare code-of which there are only so many available on any given flight.

When farecompare tells you "sold out" after you try to price out an itinerary that means that on at least one of your flights there are no more seats available in the low fare code.

Mind you, sometimes if you go directly to the airline's website, it will actually have availability for the dates that you want even though farecompare said sold out!

I passed on the essence of your question to farecompare, and the CEO of farecompare, Rick Seaney, answered me that later this year they will roll out a new system that will actually tell you if the lowest published fare code is available on any given day, before you have to go and price out the Round-Trip ticket.

Until that point, there are a few other options.
One is to use Travelocity.com's flexible booking tool. Just type in your origin and destination and choose "dates flexible." What comes back is a listing of the lowest published fares, separated by airline. By choosing a fare it will take you to a calandar, of which you choose your preferred dates. If the date you chose turns into an X, that means try again-the fare code is sold out for that date. Keep trying until it allows you to choose a return date and prices out the itinerary.

Travelocity however will only do this for a domestic flight. For an international flight, Zuji will give you the same functionality with the flexible search.

Other Booking Tips:
-Unless you require a highly complicated itinerary, it is almost always best to buy directly from the website of the airline that you are traveling on.

-If you do find a cheaper fare on a site like orbitz, be sure to take advantage of the airline's price guarantee policies!

-Always search for 1 ticket, even if you are a larger party. Many times there will only be 1 seat in a lower fare code-but if you search for 2 seats it will sell you both of them at the higher fare code!

-Nearly all domestic fares that I post are valid in either direction.

-Take advantage of credit cards that give you 3-5% in cash rebates in addition to earning you miles. Examples are the Continental Mastercard for Continental tickets and the Delta business Amex, the Starwood business Amex, or the Jetblue business amex when flying Delta or Jetblue.

Have any more helpful tips? Please share them!

Google Maps Adds A Really Neat New Feature-"Draggable Driving Directions!"

Google Maps now lets you choose your route and add destinations!

Now try it yourself!

Check out this route from LGA to 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn.

Google maps by default takes you on the Grand Central West to the congested BQE.

Let's say you want to go on the Jackie Robinson instead. Just put your mouse at the beginning of the route and a white square will show up saying "Drag to change route." Drag the box to the right about an inch to force the route onto the Grand Central West. Google will now automatically reroute you over the Jackie Robinson.

You can right click on the Start/pause/end points to remove them. Additionally you can right click anywhere on the map to add a new destination, or to add an origin if you have removed all start/stop points.

Pretty cool, no?

My 1st order was completely canceled.
My 2nd order was only half shipped-half of it was canceled, but I was charged the full $40!

I complained to them about the "scam" that they pulled and was offered a $10 gift certificate.

Not good enough.

TAM Releases List Of 176 People On Board Doomed Flight 3054 From Porto Alegre-Sao Paulo.

Update 2-11:00AM-CNN has just published the list in English.

Update: According to the Brazilian news article below, at 9AM today TAM announced that there were 186 people on board.

I don't normally post these stories, but I still haven't seen a list of passenger names on any of the English language news sites, so here is a list of the 176 passengers from a Brazilian news site.
List of passengers on TAM 3054 (Portuguese)

At least 15 more people on the ground were killed.

The Airbus A320 landed in bad weather, and crashed into a gas station, causing a fire of over 1800 degrees Fahrenheit

11 years ago a TAM flight skidded off of the runway at the same airport, killing all 96 on board...

I have personally flown out of Sao Paulo's domestic airport, Congonhas, on multiple occasions.
It is right in the middle of the city and indeed has a very short runway (shorter than the runway at Chicago/Midway where the Southwest Airlines accident occurred a few years ago)

After my incident going from the much farther international airport, Guarulhos, to the city, I actually moved some of my domestic travel to leave from Congonhas instead of Guarulhos...

Had Sunrocket VOIP Service? File A Chargeback Now!

Despite the dozens of emails I would receive from people letting me know about the latest Sunrocket $99 promotion 2 years of phone service, I never made a post on them.
They just seemed too desperate to survive.

Sunrocket service abruptly ended yesterday, leaving hundreds of thousands of customers stranded.

Don't wait-call your credit card company and file a chargeback immediately.
There are time limits to when you can file a chargeback (although some issuers, like AMEX, are particularly lenient in enforcing those limits)

AA Launches 12 Hour Confirmed $25 Standby!

AA announced that you can now confirm a seat for $25 for a same day travel flight change within 12 hours of your desired flight.

Previously you had to do it within 3 hours of your desired flight.

This change will make it much easier to confirm a change to switch to a flight later than your original flight, rather than be limited to changing to an earlier flight becuase of the 3 hour rule.

The best thing about confirmed standby is that it works even on mileage and priceline tickets, which normally do not allow standby at all!

Here's hoping that other airlines will match this customer-friendly policy change!

Rules:
-Only available for domestic/caribbean flights.
-No changes are allowed in origin/destination airports.
-Changes to the connecting airports are allowed.
-Changing from an itinerary with a stop to nonstop or vice versa is allowed!

Get ANOTHER 2,500 Starwood Points When You Are Activating Your Starwood Consumer Card!!!

Hot AMEX Signup Bonuses For July!

This is really simple, but it may not work for everyone.

I discovered this after activating a few family member's cards.

When you are activating your card, push "0" to speak to a live person.
They will run through a whole activation spiel with you.
As part of the spiel they will offer you the ability to add an additional card to your account and get 2,500 bonus starwood points for adding one cardholder, with no annual fee!

Getting an additional card should not affect your credit at all.

You do not have to give the other cardholders social security number, just a birthdate (Tell them that you don't know their social security number).

If you are not offered the additional card or the 2,500 points, just ask for it!

Good luck, and please post your experiences!

Additionally I was not successful in one try at getting this promo for an existing card, but if anyone is successful, please post that as well!
